Defensive Driving Classes
"Freeway Free-For-Alls", is the phrase used in an Associated Press article for the Chicago Tribune last year to describe what American citizen's have turned our roadways into. In a more recent article Newsweek magazine warned, "Road Rage: We're Driven To Destruction." The Washington Times was more direct in their declarations when an article ran stating that highway violence was "spreading like an epidemic." What does all this mean for the average driver?
Since 1988, when the phrase "road rage" first hit the news, the phrase has caught on like wildfire, in the same manner that the problem has grown…fast and furious, or so it seems by these reports. This should be our first clue. Once the media grabs on to a story that sells, it's difficult to let that story fade, and that is exactly what should happen to this story. The problem simply isn't escalating as the media reports. In fact, more and more drivers are entering defensive driving classes, available online and through their communities, to learn safer and defensive driving habits. Thus, lowering the incidences of "road rage" on America's highways over the last two years.
The picture simply isn't as bleak as recently reported. Currently, the statistical, and scientific evidence of more-aggressive driving on our nation's roads is showing that the trend is edging downward. There is little to no evidence that "road rage" or an aggressive-driving "epidemic", as reported by the Washington Times, actually exists. The story has turned into a media marketing scheme and nothing more.
The term itself is questionable, in a study preformed by the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety, made public in March of last year, we see that the reality of the "road rage" situation is very different that what we've been told. In fact, cases of violence between drivers has actually decreased. We can not define "road rage" as one driver getting mad and the other pulling a trigger, to be the same as two drivers yelling at each other and going on their way. Clearer lines must be drawn and the media feeding frenzy should stop so the story dies out, as the trend with violent driving altercations has done over the last two years. The gloom and doom stories are simply unwarranted.
