Yearly, the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration, chooses those new vehicles which analyst predict will have high sales volumes. In addition, vehicles that have undergone a redesign and structural changes, or those with improved safety equipment, are also selected for rigorous crash tests. This information allows, you the consumer, to obtain star rating results about the safety of a specific vehicle prior to purchase.
The automobiles are not supplied directly to the testing facilities by the manufacturer – a common misconception. Selected automobiles are purchased from dealerships from across the country at random for the most untainted results.
The program lists the safety information for most vehicles to aid consumers in their car buying decision. The test results are relayed to consumers through a star rating system – from 1 to 5 stars, with 5 being the highest.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today released crash test results for the last 2004 vehicles and some early 2005 vehicles.
