Special Report - School Bus Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a Federal government agency, carries a high standard when evaluating the safety of vehicles traveling throughout our country. A large portion of those tracked vehicles are responsible for carrying our nations young and is of high concern for this department. The promptness with which they act to remedy school bus manufacturer recalls is impressive.

In the event of a safety recall, special concern is given to those campaigns where school buses could be subject to causing multiple injuries or even the death of passenger. It is of high priority that these safety defects or noncompliance conditions are corrected in a timely manner, to ensure the safe travel of our nation’s youth.

The NHTSA began a "School Bus Safety Assurance Program" in May 1995. The focus of which is to inform State Transportation Inspection Program Directors, State Pupil Transportation Directors, interested association groups, school district personnel, nonpublic school bus owners, parents, and members of the general public of the current safety recalls involving school buses.

It is due to these exhausted efforts by the NHTSA that we happily report that school buses remain one of the safest forms of transportation in the United States. Though, even given this wide range of success, the School Bus Safety Assurance Program still depends upon the input of each of us concerned with the transportation of our nation’s children.

If you are interested in learning more about the School Bus Safety Assurance Program, you can contact either Mrs. Kelly Schuler or Mr. George Person at (202) 366-5210 or by facsimile at (202) 366-7882 or you can reach Mrs. Schuler by e-mail at Kschuler@nhtsa.dot.gov.

Feel like getting involved? Questions concerning a specific recall campaign, or information regarding a defective school bus in your area, can be directed to the NHTSA's Auto Safety Hotline DASH-2-DOT at (888) 327-4236.
